Speech delay in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a delay in the development of speech and language skills compared to typically developing children. It’s one of the early signs of ASD, although not all children with speech delays have autism.
In this video, a Speech Therapist gives tips to address speech delays in their children at home. When addressing speech and language delays at home, the focus should start with what the child already desires or communicates. Instead of immediately “following the child’s lead,” which requires observation and experience, begin by identifying and expanding on their current communication attempts (e.g., requesting food or activities). The presenter advises to limit therapy to 10-15 minutes daily, as shorter, consistent sessions are more productive and manageable for both child and parent.
