Caregiver Strategies for Building Infant Social Interaction

This research explores the role of caregivers in supporting early social communication development in infants who may show vulnerabilities in engagement. It emphasizes a family-centered approach, ensuring that parents’ cultural values and lifestyles guide interactions. The research highlights the effectiveness of coaching parents to foster engagement, showing that infants who participated demonstrated fewer social communication vulnerabilities over time. The discussion also addresses the importance of community acceptance in implementing early intervention programs, as well as the natural reciprocity between infants and caregivers—likened to a synchronized dance—where both partners influence and respond to each other’s actions. When breakdowns occur, new interactional strategies may be necessary to re-engage the infant. Ultimately, the work underscores the potential of early, responsive caregiving to support neurodivergent infants and lays the foundation for further research on effective early interventions.
