This research examines the intersection of social media use and safety for young autistic adults, highlighting both the benefits and risks associated with digital engagement. While social media provides a valuable space for autistic individuals to connect with others who share their interests, maintain friendships, and access job opportunities, it also presents unique challenges. Many autistic individuals experience higher rates of online harassment and struggle with platform designs that do not accommodate neurodiverse communication styles. Issues such as literal interpretations of interface elements, difficulty understanding online social norms, and a heightened risk of engaging with bad actors make navigating social media complex. A key component of this work is the development of an intervention program to teach social media safety, aiming to empower autistic individuals with the skills needed to navigate online spaces more safely and effectively.
