Supporting Sensory Processing: Smell & Taste Input in OT

Olfactory and gustatory senses refer to the senses of smell and taste, respectively. In occupational therapy, these senses play a vital role in supporting a person’s ability to engage in daily activities, especially those related to feeding, eating, and safety. Difficulties in these areas can arise due to sensory processing issues, neurological conditions, aging, or trauma. Occupational therapists assess and address hypersensitivity or reduced sensitivity to smell and taste, which can impact nutrition, enjoyment of food, and overall quality of life. Therapy may involve sensory integration techniques, desensitization, feeding interventions, and strategies to ensure safety and promote participation in meaningful routines.
