What is incidental Teaching.
Incidental Teaching is a method of instructions that make use of opportunities that arise in a child’s daily life to create a teaching moment.
Steps in Incidental Teaching.
For Successful incidental teaching to happen therapist requires preplanning and structuring of the environment. There are 4 steps in incidental teaching:-
- Create an engaging setting- an engaging setting encourage and tempt child into initiating an interaction for e.g. place the toys which child likes around him either at a distance or a transparent box.
- Wait for the child to initiate an interaction.
- Prompt the child for fuller request- at this stage of teaching the children will be highly engaged with the therapist and is self motivated to succeed this makes it a powerful teaching moment.
- In this last stage therapist will provide the desired outcome to the child but keep in mind it will be done in a manner that it can help in further maximizing the teaching opportunities, for example a child is asking for a candy give the child one and wait for the child to ask for more.
Incidental Teaching could be highly effective for teaching children to initiate communication because it capitalizes on the child’s self motivation.
