Handling Aggressive Behavior in Children With Autism

In this video, Mary Barbera discusses the strategies for handling aggressive behaviors in children with autism.

According to her, when it comes to aggressive autistic kids, it’s important to understand the root cause of their aggressive behavior that can be due to any of these factors, like sensory sensitiveness, communication difficulties, or any environmental factors.

Barbera suggests focusing on strategies like reinforcing positive behaviors, setting clear expectations, and reducing triggers (like a child getting aggressive when he was told to study math, etc.).

To reduce aggressive behavior in children, it’s necessary for the therapist to stay calm, use simple language, and provide a safe environment. To reduce aggressive behavior, it is necessary to encourage consistent behavior support and collaboration with professionals to build effective, individualized plans that can gradually reduce aggressive behavior over time.
