Autistic burnout and depression can look similar on the surface—exhaustion, withdrawal, loss of motivation—but they’re not the same. Autistic burnout is often caused by prolonged stress, masking, and unmet support needs, and it may improve with rest, accommodation, and reduced demands. Depression is a mood disorder that affects how a person feels, thinks, and functions across many areas of life. Understanding the difference matters, because the path to recovery—and the kind of support needed—can be very different.
