ABA Therapy: Reinforcement,
The video on ABA therapy explores the concepts of reinforcement, punishment, and maladaptive behaviors.
Reinforcement can be defined as something that is given after a behavior occurs that increases the likelihood of that behavior to occur in the future.
Reinforcements are of two types: positive and negative.
- Both positive and negative, reinforcement strengthens desirable behaviors by either providing a reward or by removing an aversive stimulus.
Punishment, on the other hand, decreases the likelihood of a behavior by introducing an unfavorable outcome.
Maladaptive behaviors in ABA are those behaviors that interfere with learning or with daily functioning, and the goal of the therapist is to reduce these by using tailored interventions, such as reinforcement, to encourage alternative positive behaviors.
