ABA Therapy: Daniel – Communication

This video from the autism behavioral intervention association channel shows the glimpse of an ABA therapy setting in which the therapist intentionally sets up material around the child ‘Daniel” to draw out verbal requests from Daniel.

Communicating- Needs

The Therapist sets up the environment in the therapy room in a manner that encourages verbal communication with Daniel. All the material in the room is kept in a way that Daniel can see them but can’t reach; this is done to prompt him to request the object verbally.

Initially, in the video, Daniel Struggles to stay seated. The therapist uses Tickling (positive reinforcement) to reinforce sitting behavior in Daniel. Then the therapist asks Daniel what he needs, prompting him to name the item. By doing this Therapist tries to keep Daniel engaged and also focuses on developing his language skills by teaching him to communicate his needs effectively.
