How to Stop Toddler Biting

Toddlers bite for different reasons.

Toddlers may bite during playful activities such as wrestling and playing. This type of bite is often called happy bites.” Biting is very common in young kids, sometimes when children are in pain, frustration, aggression, stress, or pain, and due to a lack of communication ability to communicate about their discomfort. Biting can also happen with toddlers during breastfeeding, as toddlers may react to changes they don’t understand.

Often, biting is their way of expressing pain or stress when they can’t put their feelings into words. Understanding why a child is biting is important. By recognizing the triggers, parents and caregivers can better work on alternatives to reduce or replace the biting behavior of children.
