Dealing with Challenging Behavior
In this video, the presenter is discussing understanding and addressing challenging behaviors and about ABA therapy.
ABC’s model of behavior is also cited in the video. ABC’s model of behavior states every behavior takes place in 3 stages, i.e., antecedent, behavior, and consequences. It is important to identify the function of behavior; in the video, it is explained with an example of Johnny, a kid, biting another kid, Miguel. In this example, it is crucial to analyze what triggers (antecedents) Johnny to bite (behavior) and the resulting consequences.
By identifying these elements, therapists or caregivers can make an intervention plan that addresses the behaviors underlying function, whether it’s to gain attention, avoid a task, seek sensory input, or communicate a need. A key takeaway is that accurately understanding the function of behavior is essential for successful intervention, helping replace challenging behaviors with more positive, effective alternatives.
