DIR Floortime Introduction by Dr. Greenspan

We are at a critical crossroads in our understanding of child development, with new insights that offer an opportunity to reshape care for children with developmental challenges, especially those with autism. Traditional approaches focused on modifying surface behaviours, which were valuable in their time, but now we have a deeper understanding of how the brain and mind develop. Three key insights shape the new direction:

Emotions and Relationships: Brain growth is influenced most by early interactions with caregivers. Language, cognition, and concepts are learned through emotional experiences, not just isolated skills.

Individual Processing Differences: Children process sensory input and plan actions differently. Understanding these individual differences helps address behaviours and improve adaptability across various areas.

Integrated Development: Cognitive, motor, emotional, and social development are interconnected. A functional developmental roadmap helps identify where a child is and supports their progress across multiple developmental areas.

These insights encourage a more holistic, individualised approach to therapy, considering emotional, sensory, and relational factors, as well as cultural contexts.
