Exploring Play Therapy: Make playdough at home

Playdough is a versatile and accessible tool in play therapy, offering unique benefits due to its tactile, sensory, and creative nature. By manipulating playdough, children engage in an activity that is both soothing and stimulating. Although playdough is very easily accessible in most places, if you don’t have any in hand, there’s no need to worry – you can effortlessly make it at home using simple ingredients from your kitchen!

Ingredients that you need:

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Cocoa (optional)
  • Food colour (optional)

Recipe:

The recipe for the playdough is incredibly simple. Start by mixing a cup of flour with half a cup of salt and mixing some vegetable oil in quarter cup of water in two different bowls. Then gradually add the oil and water mixture in the dry ingredients. Adjust the water quantity based on your child’s preference – add more water if they like a stickier texture and less for a firmer one. For colourful playdough, add a few drops of food colour into the mix, and for a delightful chocolatey smell, add a bit of cocoa powder. And voilĂ ! you have your homemade playdough.

To make it more interesting texture wise for your little child, you could always add some rice, lentils of different sizes or even pasta in the playdough. This helps with tactile stimulation for your child and keeps them engaged for longer.
