Ways to Reduce Head Banging in Autism

In this video by Shakti Kalyan, Dr. Pooja Singh The presenter discusses the head-banging behavior in kids.

Head-banging behavior in kids can be because of physical discomfort (like toothache, tonsils, or constipation); it can be due to sensory issues, frustration, or can be an attention-seeking behavior. The first step is to identify the reason behind the child’s head-banging behavior.

Steps to stop a child from banging his/her head on the surface or plucking his/her hairs can be done by providing alternatives to the head-banging behavior. The first step is to introduce structured exercise into the kid’s schedule to vent out the energy; the second thing is to give a massage to the kid.

If the parent can predict the child’s behavior, in that case, try to distract the kid and use headgear to protect children who consistently bang their hands, and try to regulate the child’s emotion and energy.
