This talk examines the overlap between autism and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), particularly hypermobile EDS (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), using autism research as a model for studying complex conditions. The speaker shares insights from the International Society of Autism Research (INSAR) meeting, where autistic adults highlighted hypermobility as a significant issue. Existing studies suggest a higher prevalence of joint hypermobility in autistic individuals, with EDS mothers reporting high rates of autistic children. The discussion also covers connective tissue symptoms, immune dysfunction, and autonomic issues like dysautonomia. This presentation is unique in its focus on leveraging autism research to advance understanding of EDS and its broader implications.
