Pivotal Response Treatment

This webinar provides a comprehensive overview of Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), an evidence-based therapy grounded in applied behaviour analysis principles, aimed at assisting individuals with neurodivergent conditions such as autism and ADHD. PRT focuses on key developmental areas like motivation, communication, and social interaction to foster significant progress and growth.

Key principles and techniques of PRT highlighted in the webinar include teaching in natural environments, involving families, allowing child choices, using natural reinforcers, varying tasks, and reinforcing attempts. A poignant case study of a nonverbal child with autism learning to say his first word through PRT illustrates the profound impact on both the child and his parents.

PRT was developed by Robert and Lynn Koegel, has been researched for over 30 years and focuses on pivotal areas of development, including motivation and generalisation, These areas make learning more accessible and parent-friendly. Motivational strategies in PRT involve shared control, following the child’s lead, offering choices, and identifying natural reinforcers. The significance of clear prompts and ensuring the child’s attention to enhance engagement is also emphasized. Natural reinforcers, directly linked to the child’s behaviour, maintain motivation and encourage desired actions.
