Primitive Reflexes: Indicators of Neurological Development

Primitive reflexes are automatic, involuntary movements present in newborns that help support survival and early development. These reflexes originate in the brainstem and play a key role in feeding, protection, and early motor patterns. As the child’s nervous system matures, most primitive reflexes become integrated and replaced by voluntary, controlled movements. Persistence of these reflexes beyond expected developmental stages may indicate neurological delay or developmental disorders.
