Supporting Nervous System Regulation in Autistic Individuals

Autistic nervous system regulation refers to how autistic individuals experience, respond to, and manage sensory, emotional, and physiological states of arousal. Because autistic nervous systems often process sensory input and stress differently, regulation can involve unique challenges such as sensory overload, shutdowns, or meltdowns. Supporting regulation focuses on understanding triggers, building safety and predictability, and using strategies like sensory tools, routine, co-regulation, and self-advocacy. The goal is not to “fix” autism, but to support comfort, stability, and wellbeing in a way that respects neurodivergent needs.
