This presentation talks about Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) is designed to help parents develop skills that promote positive outcomes for children with autism and is an essential component of ABA intervention. It has been widely researched for its effectiveness, offering benefits such as cost-effective service delivery, consistency in intervention, and improved generalization and maintenance of skills. BPT also enhances parent-child interactions, improves family quality of life by increasing access to social and leisure activities, and helps parents feel more competent, reducing stress and depressive symptoms. Research shows that parents can be successfully trained to act as therapists, teach specific skills (e.g., communication, daily living, and social skills), and manage challenging behaviors such as aggression, non-compliance, and feeding/sleep difficulties. Studies indicate that parents can effectively implement ABA techniques when properly trained, though more research is needed to determine the best strategies for generalization and long-term outcomes. Various service delivery models exist, but no single approach has been identified as superior. Trainer characteristics, training settings, intensity, and format (group vs. individual, self-directed vs. in-person) all impact effectiveness, highlighting the need for further research to optimize parent training programs.
